On December 10, China Longyuan Power Group Corporation Limited, a subsidiary of CHN Energy, carried out a wind and solar resource survey in the Badain Jaran Desert, marking a significant milestone in the development of its large-scale new energy base in desert regions. The project is expected to provide a new boost for both ecological restoration and economic development in these areas.

In February 2022, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the National Energy Administration (NEA) unveiled a plan to develop large-scale wind and solar energy projects in desert, Gobi and barren regions, with a particular focus on sites such as the Badain Jaran Desert. Longyuan Power Design Institute, a leading firm in new energy consulting, design, research and development, is committed to the principles of green development and is playing a key role in advancing major new energy bases in both the Tengger and Badain Jaran deserts.

At the Tengger Desert New Energy Base, Longyuan Power Design Institute has pioneered a sustainable model involving energy generation on panels, planting between panels and land restoration beneath panels. This approach not only optimizes construction costs but also boosts energy efficiency. Through comprehensive management, the first phase of a 1 million-KW PV project has increased vegetation coverage from just 0.5% to 20%, significantly enhancing local biodiversity and transforming the area into a thriving oasis.

In the Badain Jaran Desert, the professional team from Longyuan Power Design Institute has conducted an in-depth survey, thoroughly evaluating key aspects of the project, including site selection, layout and design. Using advanced technologies like 3D modeling and mesoscale wind resource data analysis, they have conducted a comprehensive feasibility, economic and environmental assessment of the project.

As China’s third-largest desert, the Badain Jaran Desert holds significant ecological and tourism value, and the requirements for new energy projects in the region are particularly stringent. In line with national strategic goals, Longyuan Power Design Institute has optimized the selection and placement of wind turbines and solar panels to ensure efficient use of wind and solar resources, while also improving the local ecosystem.

The development of large-scale new energy bases in desert areas is set to accelerate the deployment of green energy across what is often perceived as barren land. These projects will not only play a crucial role in China’s energy transition and in achieving the country’s "dual carbon" goals but will also serve as a model of sustainable coexistence between humans and nature.
